Novant Health Appel Plastic Surgery raises $11,000 for breast cancer research
Novant Health Appel Plastic Surgery brought together more than 150 people to participate in Charlotte’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K race event on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016.
The group raised $11,000 for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research efforts. The race took place at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord in a festival-like setting, said Megan Serbin, who has organized a team for Appel since 2014, when just 34 people participated.
The team ranked second again this year in money raised and the number of participants. Most of all, the team’s efforts support breast cancer survivors and their families, some of whom have been Appel patients for breast reconstruction. Many former patients also participated in the 5K event.
About 1 in 5 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
“The American cancer society actually takes care of our patients in charlotte. That’s why we choose to walk for them,” Serbin said. “We’ve seen them impact this community.”
“There is not a specific targeted age group,” Serbin said. “It can affect two to three generations in a family. These women are mothers, grandmothers, daughters, best friends and wives.”
