What is BOTOX? How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX, the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, is a prescription medicine injected into the muscles in the face to temporarily reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet near the eyes or thick bands on the neck. BOTOX works by blocking nerve impulses to muscles, reducing the muscle activity that causes crow's feet, frown lines or other wrinkles to form. BOTOX injections are not surgery, and the injections require no recovery time. Patients have been using BOTOX for more than a decade. More than 11 million procedures have been administered in the United States in that time.

Frequent BOTOX and dermal fillers questions

Can I go back to work after BOTOX or dermal filler injections?

Yes! Injections do not require anesthesia and can usually be completed in just minutes. You might experience minor pain at the injection site, inflammation , tenderness or redness, but it normally is not enough to keep you from going on with your day.

How can I prevent bruising after BOTOX or dermal filler injections?

Before your injections, avoid the medications on this list for at least two weeks. (Consult with our office before stopping any prescription medication.) After injections, you can ice the injection site if you are concerned about bruising. You should also avoid alcohol and intense exercise for at least 24 hours after injections. Any bruising that does occur should resolve itself in less than two weeks.
