Dermal fillers

juvederm logoAs we age, our faces and lips lose fullness, and wrinkles become more apparent.  Dermal fillers can temporarily plump up lips, fill in shallow contours and restore a more youthful appearance.

What are dermal fillers? How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers are injectables that add volume to soft tissues. They are often called "liquid facelifts" as they provide many of the same results as a facelift and require little or no downtime. Injectable fillers can be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure such as a laser treatment, or a recontouring procedure such as a facelift.

Injected material (most commonly collagen or fat) is eventually metabolized by the body, so results are temporary. How long results last depends on the site of the injection as well as genetic background, skin quality and lifestyle. It is impossible to predict how long your results will last.

Your provider might use numbing spray, topical anesthesia or local anesthesia to make you more comfortable during your treatment.

Novant Health Appel & Wormer Plastic Surgery offers a number of injectable dermal fillers, including Juvederm XC®, Juvederm Voluma XC®, XEOMIN®, Sculptra® and Restylane®. Dermal filler injections are done in our office near Uptown Charlotte unless you are in the hospital for a related procedure such as a facelift. Call our office at 704-316-5025 to make an appointment for dermal filler injections.

XEOMIN®

XEOMIN® is a dermal filler used to improve the appearance of frown lines between the eyes. While similar to BOTOX®, XEOMIN® is more cost-efficient in some cases. To see the dramatic improvement, click here.

Risks related to injectables

Some people are allergic to collagen. If you choose collagen injections, you will have an allergy skin test before your injections. Restylane and Juvederm are naturally occurring substances and so do not require allergy testing. And since fat is harvested from a patient's own body, there is no allergy concern.

Complications from injectables are typically infrequent and minor, but can including bruising, infection, skin peeling and lumpiness.

Frequent BOTOX and dermal fillers questions

Can I go back to work after BOTOX or dermal filler injections?

Yes! Injections do not require anesthesia and can usually be completed in just minutes. You might experience minor pain at the injection site, inflammation , tenderness or redness, but it normally is not enough to keep you from going on with your day.

How can I prevent bruising after BOTOX or dermal filler injections?

Before your injections, avoid the medications on this list for at least two weeks. (Consult with our office before stopping any prescription medication.) After injections, you can ice the injection site if you are concerned about bruising. You should also avoid alcohol and intense exercise for at least 24 hours after injections. Any bruising that does occur should resolve itself in less than two weeks.
